When Usain Bolt, the legendary Jamaican sprinter, retired after the Rio Olympics in 2016, the question of who would succeed him as the world's fastest man loomed large. Marcell Jacobs, an unheralded Italian, emerged from relative obscurity to claim the Olympic 100m crown at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Jacobs, a former long jumper, had only recently switched to sprinting. With a personal best of 10.01 seconds, he was considered an outsider in Tokyo. However, he defied expectations by running a blistering 9.80 seconds in the final, becoming the first Italian to win the Olympic 100m title.
